AJR on Statehouse Reporting Resources

Two good pieces, here and here from the American Journalism Review on the  sorry and declining state of statehouse reporting, nationwide.  The headline:

AJR’s 2009 survey of state government coverage found 355 newspaper staff reporters covering the state capitols full time. This is a decrease of more than 30 percent from the 524 counted in 2003, the year of AJR’s most recent census. The numbers were cross-checked with about 400 reporters and editors, who gave generously of their time.

From 2003 to 2009, Texas went from 28 to 18.  That said, I don’t think any of my friends who would know could tally 18 reporters covering the Texas Capitol full-time.  And whatever the number really is, it’s in no near-term danger of rising.
